Kandi Burress and Marvin Sapp Respond to ‘Prayed Up’ Controversy via Eurweb

While many online say they have been “blessed” by he song, others have rejected it, citing various religious reasons.

Burruss, an unmarried “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member, addressed the debate about the song via her blog on Bravo’s website. Although she went into recording the song expecting some people to judge her, the single mom thought some of the direct comments were “extreme.”

In reference to how she dealt with feedback that crossed the line Burruss said:

“Can you believe a woman actually tweeted me and said, ‘Bi*#c@h you can’t praise my God?’ . . Thank God I don’t let things get to me. I’m a very open and honest person. I say what I want to say when I want to say it. If I feel like doing something.”

In defense of recording the song that has received over 100,000 views in less than a week the singer continued, “I felt that I wanted to do this song, so I did, and I’m glad I did. This song is my testimony.”

In the February 21 post:

“I love Twitter, but it is an open platform for people to slay you… But lucky for me, I have just as many people or more that show me love.”

Sapp reluctantly addressed critics via a rushed Facebook post that pointed out the ministry potential of their pairing. Following is his post in its entirety:

Usually I don’t respond to people about things like this however I must this time. The problem with many in the church is 1.) that we major in minors and 2.) ignorant (not well studied) of scripture.

Lets deal with the first, This woman who was an ex R&B singer that sells sex toys and live with her man decided on a show that reaches 10 million viewers per showing (believers and unbelievers) to sing about,,,, Not sex toys, drugs or living with a man but PRAYER!!!!!! and the saints are upset.

The lyric says, “I stay prayed up, that gets me by, that how I made it through my darkest time, see I’m a sinner and thats no lie, but thank God my prayers are heard because he knows I try” Wow!!!!! nothing elicit or comprising about the lyric….

So lets look at how Jesus dealt with the sinner….. From my study of scripture the only people he checked was the church (religious people of that day) however the sinner he consistently showed COMPASSION!!!!!!! Examples…… Woman caught in the ACT of adultery Also the Woman at the well……. Never exposed them publicly, dealt with them privately. We as believer major in minors…… So caught up in the messenger that we are missing the message “Staying Prayed UP”.

Now I close with this…Everyone that God used in scripture was flawed and or had struggles…. Let me call the roll….. Moses was a murderer, Rahab was a harlet (whore), David was a murder/adulter and still considered a man after Gods own heart, Peter was a cutting cusser however was in the inner circle of Jesus, Paul was a murderer and made many blaspheme against God however wrote 2/3 of the NT, He spoke through a Donkey and if we decide to be quite rocks will cry out…

We say we are christians which means being Christ-like but question peoples motives that model his behavior….The bible speaks about witnessing and that you need to be wise to win souls and Paul says I became all things to all men that I might win some…. Compromise was never done here nor do I condone her life style or life choices and keeping 100 you don’t know the off camera conversation we had. Again big picture 10 million people at 1 time were challenged to PRAY in difficult times WOW!!!! Thats Awesome and Ministry…..

PS Didn’t spell check because I’m late to a meeting…. Be Blessed

Billy Dorsey, a Grammy, Dove and Stellar Award-winning producer and songwriter – according to Breathcast – echoes Sapp’s sentiments, also notes Christ’s tendency to step outside of the church in his ministry.

“If Sapp is looking at it from a ministry perspective, Jesus didn’t hang around with the people “church folk” figured He should have,” says Dorsey. “He hung out with those who in all aspects were beneath His righteousness, but He used that to lift them up to greatness. You can’t help someone up if you’re not willing to get close enough to let them lean on you.”

I love the song and I also watch RHOA. My father died recently and this somg really helped me out. Its amazing how the people of the church, the people that are not supposed to judge but to love thy neighbor and help in any way possible, are hypocritical and cruel.

  • Cball_cball

He is right to because Christian us to be Christ Like. The true biblical definition of sin is the transgression of the law.. Church folks claim to know this but they follow none of God’s law instead they make up their own laws because they say Gods laws are too hard.Who are u to criticize. God say I’m the same today, yesterday and forever. But Christians say God is a liar. He says go to Church on the Sabbath u say Sunday is the lords day. God died in the middle if the week u say he died on Good Friday. None of this is Ob the Bible. Man cannot interpet for God. He never lies He said he loves those who keep his commandments. He died once for us. Next time us on u. So he dies not keep forgiving the same mistakes u know are wrong. Then why do we have judgement day. Ijs

  • Bamaboo

alot of ppl dat attend church and call themselves christians, will stand before God and hear, depart from me i know u not! Dont judge! If u dont like the song dont buy it!

  • Tamecia29

Mr. Sapp said it all. people are so quick to judge lets not forget we are all sinners save by grace
so thankful we have a forgiving God or we would all be in hell. Kandi keep up the good work!!

  • When your singing career is in the toilet, you may as well take your ass back to church… LMAO!!!

  • Xjlishey1

Judge not less you be judged. I believe God is pleased. No one knows if God is drawing Kandi to himself. Do not stand in the way of sinners. Meaning don’t come between a sinner and God when he is trying to reach them

  • Lrsterling

This song can be a witness and testimony for Kandi’s life and draw her closer to Christ and start making decisions that please God not man.

  • 75tonja6

I think the song is great and should be taken as inspiration not insult.

  • Adub0202

I like the song! I serve a God that will judge us all, He doesn’t need me to judge anyone. God bless Kandi Buress, Marvin Sapp and all of us!!!

  • Nadsstew

I love the song, and if we really listen to the lyrics, we all can say that without prayer and God, we are nothing! Keep singing Kandi, The Lord is working with all of us!
As He said I. The Scripture, those without sin cast the first stone! ALL OF US HAVE SINNED AND COME SHORT OF HS GLORY, but because of His grace and mercy, we are here! Remember that haters!

  • Cocohunter75

Well said! Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!

  • Marshallkid1

Its really unfortunate that so many so-called ‘Christians’ would be against a gospel song, simply because they don’t agree with Kandi’s lifestyle..The theme of the song reflects the experiences both artists have had. Besides the fact that it is totally hypocritical for Christians to so harshly judge, it is seriously unrealistic for people to think that any gospel artist has a pure background or personal life..the funny thing is that Kandi is open and honest about her life, while most aren’t necessarily showing their personal lives on TV, or openly discussing sex and relationships? I’m sure if one looked into the private matters of ALL gospel singers, Kandi’s life would be the least shocking. She is not trying to come off as something she is not…and what she appears to be is an honest and open woman, who stays ‘prayed up’ through the trying times in her life. If that isn’t Christian, what is??

  • i love this song god is good and he bless everybody in some kinda way he rain on the good and the bad we cannot  not let a human being tells us about are faults because every body has them expect god so yes her life was not perfect but who life is .Let her sing her praise to god he will send her more blessing if she keeps him first in her life no man can fill you up like the lord ,So sing Kandi Burruss that is what god told you to do he already knows are heart before we know are self .God Bless you my girl and marvin sapp as well.

  • Venitajoyce

I know we should not cast stones or judge but we can be fruit inspectors. And for Pastor Sapp to put his name on Kandi Song is an insult to GOD. She is openly living in Sin, Drinking, Living with a man in sin, Lying , backbiting I have a problem with that. So many worldly people want to jump on the christian wagon to make money. She want to marry every man she meet. I have a problem with that. Just being a fruit inspector.

    • Lovelylady Hunter7

I dont think u should judge her jusy because she did a song with Marvin Sapp u never know wat someone is going thru ot wat relationship she has with God.let he who is without sin cast the first stone.u need to take a look at ur own life before u judge someone else honey.

    • KeAysiaDeNeeseNelson13

How do you know that God is insulted did he tell you that or you just putting words into his mouth first of all before you try to judge look in the mirror and ask yourself am I all that God wants me to be cause right now your looking like an ass being judgmental… sit down somewhere and shut up

    • Vesconti007

And who are u to pass judgement? You are not GOD and u don’t know what he has in store for her. You never know she may make it in the gates before you. For you to think this song was made solely for money and not the words behind it, makes you a very closed minded person and maybe u need to reread a bible. What happened to “COME AS YOU ARE” ?  GOD knows her heart and he know’s her mission. Never question what u truly don’t understand. Were u saved all your life? If you are saved.

    • Mskim_3

Well dear, you’re not a good fruit inspector! You said that Kandi drinks. They have pointed out several times that she doesn’t! Please, speak on on what you know and follow your first thoughts of “not judging one another”! Be blessed!!

    • shortmean1

I guess you’re one of those that’s so prefect you don’t need to be prayed up,so of you people has got higher then God himself,God loved and used sinners but it they’re not up to these holy than thy christians standard than they stand in judgment of them. It’s God job to judge your job to love. So get off that high horse before God throw you off.

    • inspector#1

I wonder where you got that bull shit from. Fruit inspector(Your a piece of Lame fruit) at what point do you people stop sinning and start judging or shall I say inspecting. Geez. Fruit inspector” I’m never going to use that lame ass term. I pray that Veritajoyce has never sinned, not sinning ,or ever plans on sinning. If so “who’s expected to inspect your fruit”

    • Well thank your almighty Jesus that you’ve never slept with a man out of wedlock, thought about sex, drank, lied or backbit while witnessing and spreading the “Word”. “Perfect” people like you are exactly why people are scared to go to church, scared to open up to God and scared to spread the Word. This woman has 1:done nothing to you, 2:loved and taken care of her daughter, and rebounded to get back on her feet after her fiancee was brutally murdered, and 3 was able to find love again after losing what she has described as the “love of her life”. As far as ONE of her lines of work, I think you’d be surprised to see the statistics of how many MARRIED, CHURCH-GOING women like yourself buy her products. Is that a sin if you are enjoying them with your husband? I’m far from perfect, but I thank my God that He loves me, supports me, and is here for me EVERY DAY- FLAWS AND ALL. I’m also glad that when I went to a church full of people like you, people who tried to make me feel horrible about myself because I lived with my boyfriend and was pregnant, instead of trying to educate me about God’s teachings, that God showed me that that was not the place for me. I found a home at another church that didn’t judge me, but instead, sat with me and showed me scripture about some of my sins so I could then work with God on correcting them. I love how people like you love pitching your hot coals at others while your glass house is probably crumbling like stale bread as we speak. Do yourself a favor and find the God I know…the all mighty, all forgiving God that uses many people for many reasons to deliver powerful, loving life changing messages to His masses. Hypocrite.

    • KayStar34

I agree with you, Venitajoyce. No, I’m not judging, I know what that feels like, I’m just trying to live right. I love Kandi, Marvin Sapp, and the song, but people are watching and wondering what a true Christian really looks like. Kandi asked, but Sapp could have privately talked to her about the life she is living, and in front of her child at that!, he could have prayed with her privately, but no, since he is getting ready to publish all of his business in a reality show, he did what he did publicly for all the world to see. He knew there would be criticism, but to lust after fame and more fame, he had to tell Kandi, “Yes, I will”. So sad!

  • W Clister

I believe we should Judge not…..Kandi grew up in the church and knows right from wrong….It is Kandi life to LIVE  not anyone else’s KANDI’S….We all fall short of GOD’S Glory && Goodness but he forgives us over and over in spite of…And last I checked no one on GOD’S green Earth is PERFECT…No One..So let GOD handle his people in his time…People if U don’t want to listen to the song don’t listen…But don’t throw stones…Cuz we all got something in our closet…ALL OF US…It’s nice to know that she stays PRAYED up…I’m encouraged by it and I applaud her…She is living her LIFE her way…#SoGetOffHer!!!

  • Gloriamomgrandma

Great people great songs. Haters r the sinners. They go to church n pray n spend rest of the day talking.g about everybody else. They need to get Prayed Up.

  • Nolia_gul

    I love the song!!

  • Kimmkio

All these so called Christians being so judgemental iswhat makes a lot of people stay away from the church. Stop judging everyone. You will be the last one’s in the gates. If you get in at all.

  • Kathycaldwell48

It really don’t mater are what she got on n on she is a child of god so stop judging hell he without sin cast the first stones ok now who have rock in there hands hush people n leave this along the reason she signing bout praying cause everyone really need to stay prayed and we do all u churc people do sin too the most we can do pray for strenght so enuff u both sing with the blessing god gave u I’m happy with the message I got out. Of it keep moving u did good

  • Heartofagoodman85

God love us all but, don’t play with God because you may hurt your self.

  • Deborah Beare

I like Kandy and I think she is an honest and sincere person. I don’t presume to judge her motive for recording a gospel album. However I am bothered by the fact that her business promotes casual sex and she is openly living with a man to whom she is unmarried which is disobedient to God’s word. I don’t judge her soul, but Marvin Sapp’s example of sinners in the Bible speaks of people who have repented and turned away from sin, but I have yet to hear Kandy acknowledge it. In my view there is a distinct difference and it bothers me that Marvin Sapp doesn’t seem to recognize it. Being a Christian involves a lot more than prayer and requires obedience to the word of God. She is also setting an example for her daughter and millions of other children that living together is okay. Certainly that has become commonplace in today’s society, yet God’s word and his commandments NEVER change. I would love to hear her speak to the scripture’s laws about fornication.

  • Ahlokin4u

God is at work Mary Mary sing it  best U don’t know what go’s on behind close doors…Kandi I say you  not the first to have sex toys & sex shows all I’m saying is enuff of trying to put her down her life is rich everything she touch turn to Gold it’s call staying prayed up,And the only JUDGE is GOD…God has blessed her with so much…I love u Kandi keep on doing what you doing…

  • Ahlokin4u

Remember on RHOA Kandi talked about how there were R&B singers(backintheday) that put something on there album that said thanked God for what he done for them…Well this is her time to just saying it out loud…

  • Mr. Jones

    Well said Mr. Sapp!

  • Bridget Odums

I love the song and I drink…….my have taken a few drugs……but guess what I’m Christian and I Stay Prayed Up!!!!!!!!! Jesus loves me this I know because The Bible tells me so

  • Lois

Continue to do your thing Kandi it’s your message those who matter don’t judge and and those who judge don’t matter stay prayed up I needed to hear that……

  • Concerned

It amazes me that people have a problem with her when many other artists outside of Christian music have made songs with other Gospel artists. David banner with marymary, Monica with James fortune salt and peppa and Kirk Franklin..smh Last I checked most of the people singing secular music grew up in the church, so they know the word. But are being judge because they choose to live their lives differently. Hmmm if we all have done dirt and bleed red nobody is better than anybody. The song says yes I am a sinner and that’s no lie but yet she tries.. Those holier than thou need to really go pray and check themselves….

  • Sharon Walker

I simply love the song! It’s real and most people during today’s time can appreciate her song! All you judge mental Christians have a lot of skeletons in your closet!!
Christians you call you’re selves? Well apparently you’re going to church just to take up space!! Just because you go to church on Sunday and sit on the 1st row doesn’t make you a Christian!! Go to Bible School so when you make another unintelligent remark you may be a little more versed about the meaning of being a Christian! Because, my dear a Christian you are not! If you were an intelligent person you would realize how so many people could relate to Kandi’s song! I’ll keep you in prayer, because you need it badly!!

  • Hazel Reece

It amazes me how judgmental many so call Christians are. There is a scripture that speaks to that….judge not that ye may not be judged. Unless you are God Himself, for only He is without sin, no one else has the authority judge anyone. And did not Jesus say to the sinner on the cross, “Today you shall be with Me in Paradise”? So who are we to say who has a relationship with God and who does not. I think those who are so judgmental need to be careful about judging others because that very person you’re judging may end up in heaven while you just might be the one missing out. That’s the problem with some Christians….instead of loving one another as Christ did and allowing Him to shine through as an example to sinners, sadly, they are too busy fulfilling their churchianity but they have no Christianity. Kandi and Marvin, I love the song and would like to know how I’d go about purchasing a copy. The song was very uplifting and inspirational. Kandi, if God speaks to your heart and want to use you as an instrument, allow Him to continue to do so. Continue to use your talents to inspire, uplift and reach others. And remember, what you do for Christ will last.

  • I am glad that God does not dish out ultimatums like some folks do. Keep doin’ what your doin’ #KandiBurgess
