Metro police have identified the woman who died after a crash and a shooting in Indianapolis, Indiana Tuesday morning.
Authorities say Jane Waughfield, 40, died as a result of her injuries. The coroner’s office has not yet released her cause of death.
When officers arrived at the scene they found a crash involving four vehicles and a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The woman was rushed to the hospital where she later died.
Police said Jane was shot at some point which then led to the crash. A male driver, in the other vehicle, was also taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Family and friends gathered to release balloons and light candles in her memory Wednesday night. Over the last 24 hours they’ve been grieving and looking for answers.
Police haven’t named a suspect or a motive, but said the shooting was targeted. Since Janes’s death, social media speculation has focused on a video Jane posted to Facebook just 24 hours before her death. In the video she said someone was threatening her life. During the 17-minute video, Jane claimed she discovered a male friend having sex with another man. She told the men to pay her $5,000 or she would release their names.
Jane also said in the video, that she feared for her life. She said if something should happen to her, one of the men she was trying to extort is responsible.
Authorities have been asked directly if social media played a role in Jane’s killing, but they have not commented on the suggestion.
