A Nevada jury on Tuesday sentenced a 24-year-old man to death for the savage rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl whose body was found mutilated and burned in the desert in 2011.

Last week, the same jury found Javier Righetti guilty of first-degree murder in the slaying of Alyssa Otremba. The defendant was 19 years old at the time of the deadly attack.

Otremba, a freshman at Arbor View High School, went missing on September 2, 2011, after sending her mother a text message to say that she was on her way home from a friend's house, where she had gone to borrow a geometry book to do her homework.

According to police, the girl was walking in a tunnel when she came across Righetti, who abducted and sexually assaulted her before stabbing her to death.

Otremba’s charred remains were discovered in a vacant lot just 100 feet from her home the following day.

Following his arrest, Rightetti admitted to raping two other women inside the same Las Vegas tunnel. He also confessed to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female cousin on a beach in Mazatlan, Mexico, three months before Otremba's slaying.

Righetti's past record included a stint in a Nevada Youth Training Center in Elko for a sexually motivated kidnapping.

At a court hearing in February 2016, Righetti stated that he knifed Alyssa Otremba 80 times in the face and other body parts before carving initials into her flesh and then setting her corpse on fire in a patch of desert in northwest Las Vegas.

A prosecutor told a judge after Righetti's arrest in 2011 that the suspect provided a detailed confession, portions of which were later read to the jury during the man’s capital murder trial.

'I grabbed her, threw her, got her all naked, raped her, and killed her -- and took her phone. Easy money,' prosecutor Giancarlo Pesci quoted the defendant as telling police, according to Las Vegas Now.

Righetti also reportedly told homicide detectives that carving the initials into Otremba’s skin made him feel like a ‘gangster’ or a ’thug.’

During the penalty phase of the trial, Righetti’s older sister, Alexia, made a plea to spare her brother's life, telling the jury that she and her brother were raised by an abusive and overbearing 'Latin macho man' father and taught his son that women must be submissive.

His other sister, Vanessa, said her love for her jailed sibling was ‘unbreakable’ despite the terrible things he had done, according to 3LV News.

The defense argued that Righetti was born with a disorder that adversely affects impulse control and asked for a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

The station 3LV News reported that before the jury announced the death sentence Tuesday, Javier Righetti addressed the courtroom, saying he was 'truly sorry for this entire tragedy' and told the victim’s family that if it were not for his actions, Alyssa would still be with them.

After Javier Righetti learned his fate on Tuesday, the victim’s mother addressed the media, saying that her daughter’s murder has destroyed two families and that nothing will bring her child back, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

‘We’re grateful that justice has finally been done,’ Jennifer Otremba said. ‘In all honesty, this is not a win for anybody.’
