28 year old Darren Wilson who was the police officer who shot and killed 18-year old Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri has resigned from the police force. The killing sparked worldwide protests that continue this weekend as many witnesses came forward with conflicting accounts of what happened. What was also startling was that Michael’s body was left in the street quite a few feet away from Darren’s patrol car, for four hours. No ambulance or paramedics were called. Darren had been on paid administrative leave since the shooting.

In a resignation letter submitted late Saturday:
I, Darren Wilson, hereby resign my commission as a police officer with the City of Ferguson effective immediately.

I have been told that my continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that I cannot allow.

For obvious reasons, I wanted to wait until the grand jury made their decision before I officially made my decision to resign.

It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal.

I would like to thank all of my supporters and fellow officers throughout this process.

Darren’s resignations is not a surprise. He was paid an annual salary of $45,302, said he has not received a severance package, although he said he may negotiate with the department in hopes of receiving one. He said he’s been told he is not the target of any ongoing internal police investigation.

Darren’s supporters have raised nearly $1M for him in case of a civil suit or if he is any need of financial support. Darren Wilson recently married another member of the Ferguson Police Department, Barbara Lynn Spradling, who is pregnant with their first child. It is alleged that Barbara was the first officer who responded after Darren shot Michael. There are also rumors that the couple both have KKK ties, with the organization helping to raise funds for the couple.
