Sister Wives: 1) A woman who is simultaneously sister and wife to her husband. 2) In a polygamous marriage, a woman who is simultaneously the sister and co-wife of another. 3) A co-wife.
In this case the “Sister Wives” airing on TLC are co-wives, non related women who are married, ‘committed’ to and have sexual relations with one man Kody Brown. The first wife Meri, 39 years old, they have been married for 20 years, with one child Mariah, 14. Second wife Janelle, 40 years old, married for 17 years, with six children, Logan, 15, Madison 14, Hunter, 13, Garrison, 11, Gabriel, 8, Savanah, 5 and third wife Christine with five children Aspyn, 14, Mykelti, 13, Paedon, 11, Gwenelyn, 8, Ysabel, 6 and she is pregnant with a daughter Truely. That’s right Kody Brown and his wives currently have 13 children and *3 step children. The Browns are a fundamentalist Mormon family, who are not a part of the mainstream Mormon Church.
I didn’t know what to expect from this show, just from the snippets of ads TLC aired. Many have voiced their disgust over TLC airing a show on polygamy; there are many disturbing shows and movies out right now that completely disgust me, I choose to not watch. If it offends you that much, just don’t watch.
“How do you feel when he’s off with another woman and you know they’re having sex, well gosh darn it they’d better” – Christine
I do not agree with this lifestyle. In watching the Browns interactions I am impressed with their cohesiveness and seemingly genuineness and love towards each other. Meri I feel looks unhappy, may be as she has one child while the other wives are having multiple children.
Kody seemed to be uncomfortable on camera, the wives and children were easy to watch and spoke well and honestly. I am even more impressed that one of the sons got up early and made breakfast for his siblings.
“She’s a sister from the same mister and he’s a brother from another mother” – Kody
It was cute hearing Janelle’s explanation on why she doesn’t have a toaster “my friends tell me more people die from toaster accidents than shark deaths”… Ok. She then preceeded to burn the toast she had in her traditional oven.
Kody is planning on adding another wife, Robyn, 31 who has *three children of her own, where will she live? Can a wife say no to adding more wives and does her opinion hold much weight? How many wives is too much? It will be interesting to see how this turns out.
“I think we’re normal, I don’t go out o yeah I can’t tell everybody about my normal family” – Janelle
Some points to ponder other than Kody and Janelle, who else works outside the family home, how is the family supporting themselves? Do any of their friends and family disagree with their lifestyle choices? What would happen if one of the wives decides to leave?
Regardless of your feelings, the Browns appear to be well adjusted, healthy and relatively happy.
