Mendeecees Harris, of Love & Hip Hop, could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted of a federal drug conspiracy charge.
Mendeecees Harris, 33, plead not guilty in federal court in Rochester Friday 8th March 2013, to a drug conspiracy charge. Because of a previous, 2001 drug conviction in Maryland, Harris faces a 20-year mandatory sentence if convicted for this charge.
Harris is one of three New York City men accused of roles in a pipeline of heroin and cocaine to the Rochester region. The other two accused, Ronald Walker, and Harris’ brother, Tyrus Harris — were arrested last year and are jailed awaiting trial. Prosecutors allege the three trafficked more than $2.5 MILLION in drugs between 2005 and August 2012.
Walker and Tyrus Harris also have pleaded not guilty. At Friday’s hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan Feldman, Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Sherman said he would request that Harris remain jailed without bail.
Harris’ attorney, Donald Thompson, said he would ask for a bail hearing, A court conference is scheduled for Wednesday, when a date may be set for the hearing. A bail hearing could reveal more of the specifics of the allegations against the three men. Details are now limited because search warrants used for raids in New York City have been sealed by the courts.
Attorneys for Harris’ codefendants have declined comment on the case.
The criminal indictment does show that police in August seized more than $1.5 million in cash from safety deposit boxes and homes linked to the alleged conspiracy. Also seized were a 2012 Land Rover and more than $406,000 in jewelry.
Authorities are also pushing for the forfeiture of properties in Georgia and Baltimore.
Mendeecees Harris is the boyfriend of Yandy Smith, one of the stars of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop.
Harris recently was acquitted in a New Jersey trial in which he was accused of the sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl. He remained in custody after the trial, awaiting a move to Rochester to face the federal drug charges in court here.
Yandy Smith stayed supportive during the sexual abuse trial, releasing a statement afterward, saying, “In the end the truth is Mendeecees Harris may be many things, but he is NOT guilty of the heinous accusations made against him.”
I wonder if Yandy is still supportive now? What are your thoughts? Post your comments below.
